Please feel free to contact us at any time
concerning the use of the treats or the leash! If you use the leash correctly, and
let it work, it will resolve your pulling dog’s behavior.
When you get the leash -
you should use a regular flat collar either leather or nylon. Definitely do not use a choke chain.
If you need a flat collar, we also make matching collars.
You can use a harness, though it is harder to train the dog and
will take longer, but it will stop your dog from pulling even with the harness. We have stopped bloodhounds in a harness
who were heavy pullers.
Then, when the dog is hooked to the leash, hold the leash steady and
just lean back into the leash. Don't walk, just lean back and hold. The dog may try
to do its usual pulling, and will realize very quickly (usually) that something is different. Let the dog
pull on the leash, and lunge on it for a little bit. Just be sure to keep it steady and lean back into
it. The leash should bring him back around to you very gently. And, if he responds like about 95%
of the dogs we do this with, he will sit down or just stand still when he realizes he can't get anywhere.
Once
he gets the feel of the leash, then it's time to try walking with him. You should plan on a s…l...o...w walk the first time. Once you start to walk,
the dog will forget and will start to try to walk like usual. When the dog starts to pull, just stop,
and hold the leash steady and let the dog pull on it. When he stops again, then you can start walking again.
It can sometimes take 10 minutes -- sometimes a couple walks before he remembers and knows he's not in control.
You can use the treats to reward him when he sits down and stops pulling. He should just sit and wait for the
okay to move once he's got a good feel of the leash.
The advantage with our leash is the stretch cord inside, and the
padded handle. This will make a much more comfortable walk ! It gives some cushion and reaction time to
the dog.
We find it is usually harder to train the human than the dog….. no jerking or yanking
or pulling is needed by the person walking the dog. Just holding steady and lean back.
This leash won't stop the dog from lunging at another dog, cat, or bird if he is so inclined..... but it will give you
time to react to the sudden pull. It is made to eliminate a lot of chiropractor bills!!
